Three major layers of shading - highlight, color, shadow
> In low-pigment skin and hair/fur/feathers, shadow is more visible, highlight more subtle
> In high-pigment skin and hair/fur/feathers, highlight is stronger, shadows are more subtle

If you overemphasize shadow on dark or highlight on light, you can get a metallic or pearlescent look.

Two subcategories of highlight:
> light bounces OFF of surface - harsher, tends to be cooler color (desaturated and/or a cooler hue - blue for black, purplish for red and red-brown, I swear to god I've seen olive and blue-green highlights but idk what factors cause it)
> light bounces OUT of surface - softer, warm hue (red/brown->orange->yellow)
See: satin rabbits and mice

recent random observation: White, gauzy dress + florescent yellowgreen embroidery = surprisingly stunning, especially considering I normally *hate* florescent clothes
