“News of the OTW bubbled up from many directions at once, most likely through my associations with Escapade, but also through an academic colleague whose partner at the time was involved. I was so excited to hear about the emergence of this fan advocacy network which brought together fannish lawyers willing to help protect our fair use rights as fans; fan scholars publishing their work through a peer-reviewed journal; fan programmers using their skills in support of the community; and of course, an archive where fans controlled what happened to their own works without the interference of web 2.0 interests.

Each of these things is important on its own terms, but taken together, this organization has been a transformative force, in all senses of the words, for fans and their rights to participate.”

For our anniversary Henry Jenkins talks fan studies, students, fandom changes over the years & why it's worth fighting for: http://goo.gl/fm19m5

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What were some of your early experiences like when your work gained its own fans?

*MarthaWells
I think my favorite experience is seeing the fan art, and seeing fanfic from my books show up in Yuletide. That’s hugely exciting to see fanfic and fan art of your work, especially to someone who was a fan from way back in the print zine era.

*SeananMcGuire
The first time something I’d created showed up as a fandom option for Yuletide, I literally cried. Happy tears! But it was like, HOLY WHAT NO HOW OMG VIXY LOOK AT THIS DO YOU SEE THIS. It’s amazing. It’s still amazing. I can’t read any of the fanfic of my own work, but knowing it exists makes me so happy.

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What things have you been excited to see in recent years, either regarding fandom or work in your genre(s)?

*Catherine R.
I really like fanfiction and its explosion on the internet. I think fanfic is a great way for people to learn the craft skills of writing. Many of my college students fall in love with writing that way: by reading fanfic and then starting to write it themselves. I always encourage them to go for it! I love the supportive structure it creates for imagination and fantasy to run wild. I think that realm is so important. Imagination lets us explore quandaries of desire and justice and truth and conflict: all the central problems of what it means to be human.

*Christina L.
It’s been incredibly exciting to see so many writers from our fandom specifically or fandom in general out there publishing books. Of course we all know the big ones—EL James, Cassie Clare—but there are others from the Twi world that had fantastic voices and ideas and who are now also bestsellers. Sally Thorne, Alice Clayton, Nina Bocci, Leisa Rayven, Mariana Zapata, Amanda Weaver—all of these women wrote fantastic fic.

In the interest of Being Excellent and considerate of those who plan to watch this episode, all references to the content of this episode are stashed under the cut and will remain so hidden for at least a month. Someponies like to watch MLP:FIM in herds and it can be a while before they get all their ponies together. 8^) As spoilers are also likely to be in any comments: don't read if you haven't yet seen the episode unless you like being spoiled. When you're ready, drop in a comment and say what you thought of this episode!

After a month, I hope Episode Discuss posts will be so far off the top page that it'll probably take the tag to find them, so about a month after posting the cut will be removed. 8^) Sometimes I go back and drop in little extras into the posts, like comics and links to the music.

Broadcast starts at 11:30 am Eastern Daylight Savings Time, which should work out to 4:30 pm UTC, 8:30 am PST and maybe about 11:30 PM Down Under. Confused? Look at the PonyCountdown widget on the community page! At the moment there are just 45 minutes left to go.

Written by Josh Haber.

For those of you following Twitter, you can follow writers Nick Confalone (Hearthbreakers), Mike and Will Fox (The Gift of the Maud Pie), Joanna and Kristine (Gauntlet of Fire), Dave Polsky (Rarity Takes Manehattan) and Jennifer Skelly (Buckball Season). Other twits in the early morning chorus may include the likes of Meghan McCarthy, Jayson Thiessen (Supervising Director of MLP:FIM), Andrea Libman , the voice of Dragon Lord Ember Ali Milner, Big Jim (storyboard work, voice of Troubleshoes and Director of MLP:FIM), Mike Vogel and Josh Haber. The hashtag to watch should be #MLPseason7.

Review for episode 19, It Isn't the Mane Thing About You, below the cut. )

Watch It Isn't the Mane Thing About You on DailyMotion in 1080p here. It appears that DailyMotion has a new look. It also failed twice while I was watching it. At least I was able to go back to where I'd left off after refreshing the page.

Download links for It Isn't the Mane Thing About You: (I'll fill in the blanks as soon as I find them)
As seen on Discovery Family in 1080p: broadcast version.

In 1080p, without logos and colour corrected: a href="">colourful.
They're all mkv format files.

Read all the transcripts, including that of It Isn't the Mane Thing About You over here on the MLP wiki of transcripts.

Clear, free, logoless screengrabs from the entire episode get uploaded to the episode wiki within days of broadcast on the MLP Wikia Gallery pages, here.

MLPMovie_in_Germany

If you want to catch the MLP Movie in theatres in Germany in English, you have one chance, two days before it gets released in the US. Here's the deal, on October 4th, the following movie houses will have a "Brony showing" of the movie at 20:00 CEST:

Colloseum (BERLIN)
Othmarschen Park (HAMBURG)
Ruhr Park (BOCHUM)
Hürth Park (KÖLN)

The Kinowelt chain of movie houses is making two of these preview events. The first, at 2:30 in the afternoon on October 1st, is for a German dub of the film. There are details here, and it looks like admission includes a poster, gratis, for "jeden Besucher" (there's one born every minute!). Buy your tickets online. Do it now, the October 4th screening will be the only one for the English version in Germany. Schnell! Schnell!

If you're a UK rabbit, you're going to have to wait until October 20th.

Other Fandoms: 24, Game of Thrones, Sherlock (BBC), Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, The Killing (Danish Original)
Fannish Interests: Fic, mostly.
OTPs and Ships: I can get invested into a number of pairings if a fic is well written :) Longtime favorites include Sean Bean/Viggo Mortensen, Richard Armitage/Graham McTavish, Jack Bauer/Chloe O'Brian, Jack Bauer/Tony Almeida. I'm currently writing a Richard Armitage/Orlando Bloom fic with a friend, you can find it here at AO3 if you're interested!

Favourite Movies: mostly Wes Andersen and Lars von Trier movies
Current/recent TV Shows: Orphan Black, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Dear White People, The Fall, Dicte, Call the Midwife. I'd love to see 'The Handmaid's Tale' and am looking foward to the second season of 'Topf of the Lake'.
Other interests: books, design, politics (European, mostly), environmental issues

Other Info: I've only recently moved over from LJ to DW and my subscription page is still mind-numbingly empty. I'd love to widen my circle here, so to speak, and am always happy to engage in fandom-chatter. Fic recs are also very welcome! Just talk to me :)

The Legends of Equestria multi-user interactive immersive environment game is back and open to all! Unfortunately, "all" causes the servers to crash so you might want to try and dial in tomorrow or maybe even next week. But the good news is that it's just an open weekend event like in the past, but it supposed to keep on going, so you and I should have ample opportunity to get in and explore. Right now I'm downloading the client. It's 762 MB and that's going to take me 2 hours. Browsing anything else right now is like working with a 33 kb/s dial-up modem. Been there, done that.

So to get in you need to create an account on the Legends of Equestria forum. That username and password is what you use to log into the LOE game.

You will also need a client to run the game. You can download that here: https://www.legendsofequestria.com/downloads . There you can choose from Windows, Mac and Linux. I don't know what the "Launcher" is, so I chose a "direct download". When it finally finishes downloading, I expect to have a zipped folder. If I recall correctly, I unzip the folder, find the file with the feather icon and click on that to launch the game.

This time around, the pony you design after logging in starts the game as a foal and ages as you gain experience. There are several quests, like the cookie quest that nets you a pair of music headphones, and a few new areas, such as the apple wood. Beware of beasties, even if they're pretty.

LoEf15_06

You can't do that anymore, those flying things are deadly.

The Daring Done episode has aired and I have fresh links for you on the episode 18 discussion post over here, so you can once again watch it on Daily motion in 1080p or download the broadcast version. The other links could take a few days to become available. I rewatched most of the episode via the livestreams, but livestreams seem to be very bandwidth demanding now and they skip a lot.
